Miso labels the equipment. Mochi labels the equipment she has already touched. Between them, the laboratory maintains a reasonably honest record.
In white coats and goggles, the sisters study the Twin Portal. Gold light gathers around Miso’s instruments. Blue and violet gather around Mochi’s. When their work meets, a doorway opens where the wall had been feeling quite certain of itself.
They explore strange places, help stranded travelers, and keep notes about what brings everyone back. Whiskerways still carries the familiar routes. A new experiment does not make the old way home obsolete. It does, occasionally, require cleaning the old way home.
Some nights they learn something. Other nights they learn that their first explanation was wrong. Mochi finds both exciting. Miso prefers the kind that does not smoke. Beyond the window are more worlds than they could visit in a lifetime. On the desk is an unfinished map with space for the next question.
