Miso can tell the sun what to do. Mostly, she asks it to stay on the rug. The sun has other appointments, which Miso considers a management problem.

She is Andy’s first princess, with deep-blue eyes, a dark little face, and very exact ideas about a tidy home. Mochi lives in that home. This has made tidiness an interesting theoretical subject. Miso loves her sister anyway, right down to the suspicious noise behind the chair.

When that noise turns out to be trouble, warm light gathers beneath Miso’s paws. She can wake sleeping stars and open a bright path through the dark. Then she comes back to check the room she left. Being able to protect whole worlds would be rather silly if she forgot somebody under the bed.

At the window, she watches sunlight cross the floor. It has traveled an astonishing distance to warm one small cat. Miso closes her eyes. She appreciates a universe that occasionally gets the details right.
