Toasted cereal / milk / maple
A golden cereal crunch. The cartoon starts before the bowl is ready.
Cool, creamy softness beneath the Saturday sweetness.
A tiny amber drizzle with wood-paneled warmth.
A gentle sweet finish, soft as the old couch.
Toasted cereal falls into a soft bowl of rice milk. A little maple and vanilla warm the shag carpet morning. The cartoon has begun. The universe may be expanding, but nobody needs to get up yet.

BEHIND THE EDITION
Saturday arrived in a patch of sunlight on the shag rug. Miso checked the television for birds. Mochi checked beneath it for the birds that had fallen out. Neither investigation produced a bird, but the cartoons were promising and breakfast had no particular deadline.
The little television was the prize at the bottom of the box. Its sun smiled through every channel, even the one that was mostly snow. Miso called this poor reception. Mochi called it dependable company. They tied it to a bottle dressed in warm stripes and unruly fur, then settled in for one more cartoon. Somewhere outside, the world continued being very large. For a while, two cats and a square of sunlight were plenty.
