The pink puff has a black loop, a fondness for moonlight, and no obvious qualifications for saving anyone. Mochi carries it everywhere anyway. Qualifications are not everything.

Before it glowed, it was the toy she could hold when an adventure felt too large. Then a silver-blue thread of light caught its loop at Windowland. The puff floated. Mochi tapped it. Several whiskers became involved in the discovery.

Later, after she had helped every frightened companion through a dangerous crossing, her own paws began to shake. She had counted everyone except herself. Miso stayed close while Mochi held the puff beneath her chin. Its warm pink light helped her find her strength again.

She still loses it beneath cushions. Even remarkable objects obey the ancient household law that the thing you need will be somewhere ridiculous. Miso helps her look. Sometimes the search itself is the useful part: a tired little healer asking someone else for help.
